Hi,
Twisting your knee with any force can put pressure on the outer ligaments of your knee, and it can also potentially cause a meniscal (cartilage) problem.
These issues, among others(previous injuries/wear and tear etc), can cause your knee to swell.
If this has just happened, then follow the RICE regime, rest as needed (if walking is painful then you may need a stick or even crutches from your local chemist) ,ice 20 minutes every 2 hours, use a compression bandage, and elevate your knee when you can.
If after 2 days there is still lots of swelling or you are still limping, or there is feelings of giving way/locking/clicking when walking, this is a sign you definitely need your knee checked over.
Our Physios see lots of knee sports injuries all the time. We can check it over, give you more specific advice and the right exercises to start working on. If we are worried that you have done significant damage to your knee then we help to refer you to get further scans and advice.
I hope it starts settling quickly for you, but if it doesn’t then get in touch again. You can email reception@myphysiosa.com.au or call either of our clinics if you need us.
Regards,
David
