It has been a busy past few months for Annie, Joy and Tim at the Hills Integrated Pain Team (HIPT).
In late March we all attended Pain Adelaide, a multidisciplinary state pain conference – held once a year.
This year, we attended presentations from international and interstate speakers on topics such as: pain medications, pacing, graded activity, acceptance & commitment therapy. The conference also included how to screen persistent pain patients and formulate plans that will lead to the best clinical outcomes for patients.
Annie also attended the Australian Pain Society scientific meeting in March, held in Brisbane which also had some great local and international speakers as well as fantastic networking opportunities.
On the 30th May, the HIPT (Annie, Joy and Tim) along with Dr Tim Semple (from the Royal Adelaide Hospital Pain Unit) gave a joint presentation to Adelaide Hills GP’s on an integrated approach to treating chronic pain patients. Hearing Dr Semple talk was fantastic – not only did we learn a lot about medications for pain, he also stressed strongly the need for integrated therapy, utilising the skills of psychologists and physiotherapists when managing persistent pain. It was also great to have an opportunity to speak to local GP’s about treatment techniques such as pacing strategies, re-educating efficient movement, cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance & commitment therapy. The HIPT and Dr Semple are booked in to present the same talk again in early July to the staff at the Summit Health clinic in Mt Barker. We hope to present to local nurses and also other allied health practitioners to our service and what we can offer local patients with persistent pain.
With all this activity, we have also been busy assessing and treating patients who have been a referred to us for assistance in assessing and managing their pain. We are pleased to report some really positive results with patients, including improved functional outcomes and an increase in their quality of life.
And finally – It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Adrian Primerano, myPhysioSA Physiotherapist, has joined our team. Adrian will be working with Annie, conducting joint assessment and treatment sessions every second Thursday morning at Summit Health clinic. This will allow patients that are referred to the HIPT to access an earlier assessment session and start with therapy more quickly than they may have done otherwise.
We look forward to working with Adrian and will keep you updated with the latest from HIPT.
